I recently switched over to a matte lipstick and I have to admit that the first time I put it on, it looked like a cakey mess. Not very attractive at all! I then did some research and experimenting and came up with a good way to make my matte lipstick look perfect, or nearly perfect.
I don’t think it is just me who suffers from matte lipstick clumpy, cakey mess by the end of the day, so I figured I would let all you women out there in on how to got my matte lipstick to look flawless even at the end of the night.
The first thing that I did was exfoliate my lips to get the dry and dead skin off. This is extremely important especially in winter time when my lips get even drier. It may sound weird but I make a simple sugar and water paste (mostly sugar so it doesn’t dissolve all the way) and rub it on my lips. It’s simple and very cheap to do and it doesn’t taste so bad either.
Next, I take a chap stick (Soft Lips or even CarMax) or a moisturizer and apply it to my lips. I had heard of doing this after you apply the matte lipstick, but I have found it works best before you apply the lipstick. This makes your lips even smoother and makes the lipstick go on smoother and stay clump-free.
Make sure that the chap stick or moisturizer is completely dry and sunken into your lips before you apply your lipstick or you may get lipstick bleeding out of your lip lines. I usually will move onto another facial feature such as start applying my eye shadow or liner in between applying the chap stick and the lipstick.
The last step is applying the matte lipstick. I don’t use a lip pencil or anything like that. I simply apply the lipstick and that’s the end of it. Just be sure to not lick your lips or smudge it before it completely dries.
If you need to reapply your matte lipstick and your lips are still pretty smooth, then just reapply your lipstick, but if you notice your lips are dry be sure to do the chap stick/moisturizer step before reapplying the lipstick.
I personally now love the look of matte lipstick now that I know how to apply it perfectly and not have to worry about having clumpy and cakey lips.
There are some matte lipsticks that claim that you won’t get cakey or dry lips from them, but I haven’t been able to find one that really follows that. I would recommend that even with this type of matte lipstick that you still follow the above steps. It only takes a few extra minutes and you can be sure that you will have beautiful kissable lips all day long.
