Bangs or no bangs? That is one of the most popular questions women tend to ask themselves when it comes to their hairstyles.
How many times have you looked in the mirror and thought you should cut some bangs for your hair? I know that there are many times that I am tempted to take the scissors and just cut the front of my hair into pretty little bangs. For me, I feel like bangs give your hairstyle that extra added, special touch. It makes your hair look a little more stylish and put together.
But… bangs are definitely not for everyone.

The thing that keeps me from using those scissors is that I have had bangs in the past, and they just didn’t work with my face or hair. The only type of bangs that I have ever been able to pull off are the ones that are side swept across the forehead and really don’t count as true bangs since I tend to keep them longer than what bangs should be.
So, before you decide to add some bangs to your hairstyle here are some tips to determine if you should be bangs or no bangs.
Bangs and the Shape of Your Face
Bangs can have a dramatic effect on the way you look. They can make your face look slimmer or heavier. They can make you look younger or older. They can make you look stylish and trendy or completely out of date.
If you are considering bangs or no bangs for your hairstyle, your face shape should definitely be the biggest influence on whether to cut your hair.
First, determine what face shape you have. Most people don’t have a perfectly oval or heart shaped face but you should get the general shape of your face.
Women who have a round face should generally stay away from having bangs. Bangs tend to exaggerate a round face to make it appear wider and heavier than it is. If you have a round face and you really want bangs, then opt for thin, wispy bangs that can be swept to one side. Avoid heavy, blunt bangs at all cost.
Just like women with a round face, women with a square face, should also be careful when choosing bangs. Bangs on a square face can also make the face look wider, which no woman ever wants to happen. Again, if you really want bangs, go for a thin partial bang that doesn’t cover the entire forehead.
Women who have a heart or oval face shape are good candidates for bangs. This is because with these shapes the face is narrower towards the bottom half which means bangs won’t make you look like you have a really wide face or add any weight to you. Instead bangs may even help your face look thinner in this instance.
Also with a heart or oval face shape you usually have a longer face and may have a longer forehead, which means hair bangs can easily balance out the length of your face and help you not have such a long forehead. Women with these face shapes can go for blunt cut bangs, wispy side-swept bangs or basically whatever type of bangs they want.
Bangs Or Not – Other Things to Consider Before You Cut Bangs
There are a few other things you may want to consider before you go ahead and get bangs.
You should consider the type of hair you have. If you have thicker, course hair take that into consideration when deciding what type of bangs you want. A blunt cut may not look the best if you hair is course and thick and may look too heavy.
On the other hand if you have really fine hair, a wispy bang may not be a good idea because it may make your hair look stringy and extra fine instead of nice and healthy. You may need to opt for a heavier bang area for your fine hair.
Other things that can influence your hair decision is whether your hair is curly or straight and whether you have thinning hair or something like a widow’s peak that may affect how your bangs can be styled.
If you need more help on your particular type of hair and if bangs would work well with it, definitely pay a visit to a good stylist before you take the scissors into your own hand.
